What are some facts about Earth?
Earth is the only planet to have liquid water on its surface. Liquid water covers 71% of the surface. Its atmosphere is 77% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, with traces of other gases. White clouds of water vapor hide much of Earth’s surface. Earth is the 3rd planet from the sun. It orbits approximately 93 million miles from the sun. That isn’t exact because the earth’s orbit is not a perfect circle, but more of an oval or an ellipse. So this distance can change over the course of a year. Although Earth is in some ways a typical rocky planet, several of its most interesting features appear to be unique. For example, a global map of Earth with the ocean water removed shows a very different planet from our neighboring rocky planets. The patterns made by continents, oceans, aligned volcanoes, and linear mountains are the result of the process geologists call plate tectonics Earth is 24,901.55 miles around at the equator, but slightly shorter if measured around from pole to pole.
