How is Feminism related to the appointment of ambassadors?

The Department of Foreign Affairs released a report in January 2017 regarding the incumbent Philippine Ambassadors to receiving states. According to the report, there are a total of 61 Philippine Ambassadors in which 40 are males and 21 are females. The disparity in the number of male and female Philippine ambassadors have urged to find out what causes the divergence and inequality in the appointment of ambassadors in the Department of Foreign Affairs. One of the cornerstones of this research is focused on the theory of Feminism and how it is relevant in this study. According to Freeman (2004), Feminism is defined as a belief that men are more favored as a group than women, although they are inherently equal because gender influences social hierarchies, therefore, there is a need to equalize gender through social movements. Furthermore, Butler (1990) states that gender is a social construct that dictates what roles and labels men and women should play in society. The origins of the Feminist movement dates back to as early as the 19th to the 20th century, where the first wave mainly focuses on fighting for the right to suffrage. This was the stepping stone for the second and third wave of feminism which focused on the unequal policies on women (Tandon, 2008).
