What is Gone with the Wind?

Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, was published in 1936. Gone with the Wind, which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1937, is the story of the way a land and people ravaged by war can reach within themselves and overcome what seem to be insurmountable odds. This novel also shatters stereotypes about the place of women and minorities in society.  Scarlett O’Hara struggles to maintain her familial home of Tara, a plantation which has fallen into disrepair after Atlanta was burned during the Civil War. Scarlett marries her first husband, who dies shortly afterward, leaving Scarlett with a baby. She remarries to stabilize her finances. Rhett Butler is her fourth husband, with whom she has one child, Bonnie. Scarlett has a daughter with her fourth husband, Rhett Butler. After their daughter dies in a riding accident, Rhett falls out of love with Scarlett, who only then realizes how much she truly loves him.
