Who is Arthur Schopenhauer?
Arthur Schopenhauer was born on February 22, 1778, in Danzig on Heiligegegeistgasse in Gdańsk to Johanna and Heinrich Schopenhauer, wealthy German patricians. It is thought that Arthur’s father may have committed suicide in 1805. After his father’s death, he engaged in two years of hard work as a merchant in his honor. Following that, he attended the gymnasium of Gatha and focused completely on his studies for a time before returning to live with his mother. In 1809, Schopenhauer enrolled at the University of Göttingen, where he studied psychology and metaphysics. During this time, he was also influenced through lectures by Johann Gottlieb Fichte and Freidrich Schleiermacher. When a cholera epidemic struck Berlin in 1831, Schopenhauer moved to Frankfurt, where he would live alone for the remaining 27 years of his life. He continued to write philosophical notes, which were published after his death in a work entitled Senilia. His health began to decline in 1860 and on September 21st of that year, he died of heart failure at the age of 72.
