Who is Placido Domingo?
Placido Domingo was born in Madrid in 1941, his family moved to Mexico in 1949. There, he studied at the National Music Conservatory. His debut came as a baritone at the Degollado Theatre in Guadalajara in 1959. He went on to join the Tel Aviv Opera in 1962. He is acknowledged as one of the greatest operatic artists working today, with a repertory of more than 140 roles and more than 150 recordings, including 99 full-length operas. Role creations include Emperor Quin and Pablo Neruda. He made his conducting debut in 1973. When he had already gained great international renown, he recorded the official song for the World Cup held in Spain in 1982. He has performed at the most important opera houses around the world with a repertoire of nearly one hundred different roles. Domingo has been directed by the most prestigious directors such as Herbert von Karajan and Zubin Mehta. Together with José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo formed The Three Tenors, the trio that made opera more accessible to a wider audience. Domingo has been a member of the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts since 2003.
