What is Mai Tai?

What is Mai Tai?

Mai Tai was invented by Trader Vic in 1944. The way you would like the Mai Tai more was adapted in 1954 by the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.  Both of these were likely a combination of an inspired drink called the QB Cooler invented by Don the Beachcomber in 1937.  But the Mai Tai you know is likely mostly interpreted by bartenders following the R.A.L.T.P.M. recipe. There are 4 Mai Tai Recipes, and the first is not a Mai Tai at all.  Depending on the history you choose to believe, Trader Vic’s Mai Tai was based on the flavor profile of Don Beach’s QB Cooler.  To make Mai Tai, fill a 4-ounce glass with ice. Pour in 1 tablespoon light rum, 1 tablespoon orange curaçao, 2 tablespoons orange juice, 1/2 tablespoon fresh lime juice, 1 dash orgeat, and 1 dash simple syrup. Drizzle 1/2 tablespoon dark rum on top. Garnish with mint, pineapple slice, and paper umbrella, if desired. Cocktail Tip Sidestep the extra calories by making cocktails with fresh fruit juices and calorie-free beverages rather than mixes, which are loaded with sugar.
