Who is Ares?

Who is Ares?

Ares is best known as the God of War. Ares is sometimes shown in art as both young and old, but he always carried a spear and wore a helmet, perpetually ready for battle. Ares was the son of Zeus and Hera, though he was disliked by both for his aggression and embarrassments. When he was a child, they paid so little attention to him that he was captured by twin giants and held in a bronze jar for a period of time. It was not until the giants’ stepmother found him that he was released by his brother, Hermes, and saved from insanity. In Greek mythology, Ares often had a quick temper and was prone to jealous outbursts.  He lusted after Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and eventually lost her to Adonis, the most beautiful man in the world.  Not accepting defeat, he turned himself into a boar and killed Adonis.
