What is Pegasus?

What is Pegasus?

Pegasus sprang from the blood of Medusa after Perseus beheaded her. Her blood dripped from her head across entire Greece, Medusa’s blood came in contact with the foam on the beach, that is why Pegasus is white. Pegasus is described as a winged white horse although there are many other variations in modern fantasy. Pegasus was fond of drinking from the spring of Peirene at Corinth. It was here that the hero Bellerophon, in need of a mount on which to attack the Chimaera, found the steed and tamed it with a golden bridle given him by Athena. After Pegasus was born, he flew to the top of  Helicon where he landed. Greek mythology then states that the slightest touch of the creature’s hooves made springs; one of the springs is the famous Hippocrene, or horse, spring. Greek mythology also puts another resident on mount Helicon, mount Helicon was also known as the home of the muses. Pegasus’s connection with mount Helicon is what has made Pegasus such an interesting subject for many authors down through the ages.
