Who is George Washington?
George Washington was born in 1732 in Virginia. In May 1775 Washington was declared as the General of the Continental Army. It was a tough time as George Washington had to train an army of colonial farmers to fight against trained British soldiers. He lost many battles during the American Revolution that went on for six years. It was in 1789 that George Washington was elected as the first President of the United States. He was the one who helped build the words of the Constitution. He also formed the first Presidential Cabinet with the Secretary of State and Secretary of Treasury. Washington’s presidency helped to establish many protocols and traditions that are still in use today. This included the creation of a cabinet system, the inaugural address, and title of Mr. President. His Republican values had a lasting impact on American society and government. He served for two terms; 8 years, as president. The people wanted him to run for a third term, but he refused. In 1799 he became ill with a sore throat. The doctors in those days did not know how to treat an illness, and some think their treatment caused his death.
