What is the Prime Minister role in Viet Nam?

The Prime Minister, the country’s chief executive or head of government is elected by the National Assembly. Among other things, the Prime Minister presides over the 21-member cabinet, in turn, comprised of the government’s various ministers, also approved by the National Assembly. While the National Assembly formally appoints the Prime Minister and members of his cabinet, the Politburo and the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam must first approve of the nominees. Underneath the Prime Minister are a number of Deputy Prime Ministers who have oversight powers over specific sectors of society and government, e.g., economic affairs, international relations, international trade, environment, etc.. There are currently twenty-one discrete ministries each of which have representatives in the provinces and several state-level national commissions and committees such as the Central Bank and the State Inspectorate whose heads enjoy ministerial rank.
