What is the history of the Brazilian Flag?
The overall Brazilian flag background is green with a large yellow diamond in the center The diamond bears a blue celestial globe with 27 white five-pointed stars, one for each state and the Federal District arranged in the same pattern as the night sky over Brazil The globe has a white equatorial band with the motto ORDEM E PROGRESSO (Order and Progress). The flag was designed by Raimundo Teixeira Mendes in 1889 and there have been a number of versions of it during the flag’s 126 year lifetime. The first version had 21 stars and this was updated to reflect the newly-created states in Brazil. The stars represent the night sky as seen in Rio de Janeiro on 15th November 1889. The green and the yellow have been retained from Brazil’s previous flag which represented the Empire of Brazil. Also, Brazil is mineral rich country especially in gold, the big yellow diamond on the flag of Brazil represents the gold, while its dark green color field represents the forests and the greenery of the country.
