He writes novels with themes related to faith, love, tragedy, and fidelity. He has 16 published novels and lives in New Bern, North Carolina, with his wife Catherine and their five children. His novels tend to be romantic stories where the main characters do not experience a typical happy ending. He graduated in 1984 as the top student from Bella Vista High School and then started at the university, the University of Notre Dame, where he had received an athletic scholarship. He majored in business economics, and he graduated in 1988.
