What is the government structure of Viet Nam?

Viet Nam has been governed by four Constitutions since its founding in 1945. The 1946 Constitution was a vaguely-worded document that established a broad-based unity government whose principal goal was to solidify political support for the anti-colonial effort. The 1960 Constitution was adopted in what was then known as North Viet Nam to validate Viet Nam’s transformation into a socialist society. The 1982 Constitution was enacted to deal with the reunified country—the current Socialist Republic of Viet Nam—and validate the leadership of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. The 1992 Constitution reorganized the government along socialist lines and Article 4 established the CPV as the leading organ of society. The 1992 Constitution was in so many ways a reaction to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe as may be gleaned from the charge given to the Armed Forces of Viet Nam to defend socialism in addition to its other sacred duty of defending the fatherland.
