What is the eligibility requirements to become a Member of Parliament in Canada?
Unless specifically declared ineligible, any Canadian citizen, the distinction between natural-born or naturalized, aged 18 or older on election day may stand for election as a Member of Parliament. One can stand for MP in only one electoral district at a time and the candidate does not have to be a resident of the electoral district he/she wishes to represent in Parliament. A prospective candidate must first choose whether to stand for office either as an independent or as a representative of a political party; if the candidate chooses to run as an official candidate of a political party, he or she must be officially endorsed by that political party. The candidate must file a “nomination paper” with the returning officer for the electoral district where he/she intends to stand for election, along with all other documents required by the nomination process. Members of Parliament are elected by simple plurality and hold office for five years unless Parliament is dissolved before the five-year term of the Parliament is completed.
