Harry S. Truman was born on May 8, 1884, to John & Martha Truman. He is the only president in recent history to not have a college degree. When the U.S. entered World War I in 1917, young Harry re-entered the Missouri National Guard, where he had previously served in an artillery unit. Truman took the oath of office to become the thirty-third President of the United States. The threat of communism continued to be a major focus of Truman’s second administration. The president supported the creation in 1949 of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military alliance of democratic nations, including the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom and eight other countries, and appointed Dwight Eisenhower (1890-1969) as its first commander.
