What is the history of American Federalism?

The American federal-presidential system of government was adopted by the US founding fathers during the Constitutional Convention held in Philadelphia from May through September 1787. The main impetus that led to the creation of the federal system of government by US’ founding fathers was the failure of the Confederation of American States. The Confederation of American States failed because it was not a government in a real sense, the citizens of the original States did not consider themselves “Americans” and were extremely jealous of their State and regional identities, the Confederation did not have any funds and it did not have the power to levy taxes, and, all thirteen States did not trust the Continental Congress which had had very limited powers. The first agenda item was to craft a system of government that would, on the one hand, guarantee a national government with real powers even as it protected state rights and prerogatives; that’s when and how the federal system of government was born.
