Who is William McKinley?

William McKinley was born in 1843 in Niles, Ohio. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, McKinley enlisted in the Union army as part of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment. After the war, McKinley studied law, and in 1867 he established a practice in Canton, Ohio. In 1876, McKinley was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1896, McKinley won the Republican presidential nomination. During his first term, the United States fought a one hundred day war with Spain to liberate Cuba. Puerto Rico became the nation’s first outside possession. Also during McKinley’s administration, big businesses grew, protected by tight money and high tariffs. Elected after the closing of the American frontier to the west, McKinley found new ways to expand in the Pacific and Caribbean following the Spanish American War. His Open Door policy to China established the United States as an equal to the great European powers. McKinley was elected to a second term as president. But in September 1901, a mentally ill man shot him. He died eight days later.
