What happened to Viet Nam after the Diem government?
The Diem government fell because it was unable to solve Viet Nam’s serious economic and political problems and was repressive and hopelessly corrupt. Ngo Dinh Diem was succeeded by General Duong Van Minh who was in office for only three months, Marshall Nguyen Cao Ky, a flamboyant Air Force officer, General Nguyen Van Thieu, a corrupt and brutal dictator who served as president from 1967-75, and General Duong Van Minh, to preside over the surrender of South Viet Nam to North Viet Nam. Direct US military involvement in Viet Nam began on 8 March 1965 after the US Congress passed the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution on 7 August 1964, authorizing the US president to use military force in Viet Nam. The “Republic of Viet Nam” fell to the communists led by Ho Chi Minh on 29 April 1975; Ho died on 2 September 1969 and the “two” Viet Nams voted to unite as one nation on 2 July 1976.
