What is a Cardiologist?

A cardiologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating conditions of the heart and blood vessels.  The cardiologist evaluates the symptoms and medical history and then recommends diagnostic testing. When necessary, the cardiologist then brings in other members of the cardiovascular care team, who work together to ensure the best outcome for each patient. Patients remain under the care of the cardiologist even when they are referred to other specialists. The training to become a cardiologist is rigorous and includes more than 10 years of medical training. A Cardiologist treats many conditions affecting the heart and cardiovascular system including arrhythmia heart failure, congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease. They also are vital in helping to inform decisions regarding procedures such as cardiac catheterization, balloon angioplasty, and open-heart surgery. Cardiologists may also be required to spend several hours a week on administrative tasks. Furthermore, as cardiology is a complex and evolving field of medicine, cardiologists are also required to keep current on developments through continuing education and training.
