What is the problem with today’s education system in the Philippines
Nelson Mandela once said that education is the most powerful weapon a person can use to change the world. This is evident in developed countries with low rates of unemployment and a high literacy rate since their workforce is filled with educated workers and professionals. Generally, those in developed countries enjoy better benefits in education, healthcare, housing, and social welfare. In a local setting, there are still problems being encountered in developing the education in the Philippines. According to Article 14 of the Constitution of the Philippines, “the State shall protect and promote the right of all citizens to quality education at all levels, and shall take appropriate steps to make such education accessible to all.” However, teachers are rallying in the streets of Manila for higher wages, and the most recent protest happened in this year’s celebration of World Teacher’s Day last October 5, 2017. Students still cannot afford to go to school due to poverty and some schools in far-flung areas lack the proper facilities conducive to quality education.
