How is Japan’s relations with US after the war?
The first phase of US occupation of Japan: punishment and reform and eradication of the old order, Japanese military forces were totally disbanded followed by the trial of war criminals. Article 9 was written in the new Constitution wherein the Japanese people forever renounce war as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force in settling international disputes; land, air and sea forces will never be maintained. In Japan’s commercial relations and industrial development, the US tried to restructure the zaibatsu system, a system by which Japanese firms were closely intertwined with each other and with the central government, but it failed. In sum, while the US occupation had enduring effects, Japanese culture proved a formidable force and resisted change at many points. However, this was concluded with a treaty. Japan and the US concluded the US-Japan Security Treaty in 1951 – a bilateral alliance with the US as the only course compatible with international conditions and Japanese needs. US power would underwrite Japanese rearmament and US acknowledged the Japanese need for and right to military self- defense.
