In 1904, Tokyo challenged Russia in the Russo – Japanese War and this victory over Russia advanced the Japanese empire which gained de facto control over much of Northeast Asia – Sakhalin and the Kuril islands came under Japanese rule and it controlled Korea; the victory over Russia, the first by an Asian over a Western country, raised hopes throughout the region that the West could be beaten at its own game.
