How to learn to play an instrument as an adult?

Contrary to popular belief, you can learn to play an instrument as an adult and feel awesome about it. You might be motivated to start learning an instrument for all sorts of reasons, but the best thing you can do is to let go and set realistic standards. The best way to keep motivated and make progress is to build practice into your routine. Whether you jam on the strings straight after work or before your porridge, setting a regular time aside will drive you to stick with it. Working on technique sounds boring but it will help you learn to play better in a shorter timeframe as well as making sure you don’t end up cramps or pain in your hands or arms. Another habit that works very well is making sure that no matter how long or short your practise session is, having a goal for every time you are on your instrument it will contribute to faster improvement. Don’t expect miracles right away, though. Your improvement will actually come during the rest periods between practicing, rather than in the practice session itself.
