What is an Anesthesiologist?

An anesthesiologist is a physician who has completed four years of medical school after graduating from college. Following medical school, today’s anesthesiologist completes four to five years or more of specialized medical training in the field of anesthesiology. Anesthesiologists are physician specialists who have the critical responsibility for your well-being throughout the period surrounding your surgery. This care includes medically evaluating you before your surgery, maintaining your wellbeing during surgery and supervising your care immediately after surgery. Anesthetics block pain and other signals from passing along nerves to the brain and Anesthesiologists are able to assess any risks to patients as well as determine the safest course of treatment for each patient depending on the procedure and type of anesthetic being administered. Anesthesiologists can often specialize further into areas such as cardiac anesthesia for heart surgery, pediatric anesthesia as well as neuro anesthesia for surgery on the brain and spinal cord.
