What is a brief history of the Internet?
The Internet is a series of huge computer networks that allows many computers to connect and communicate with each other globally. Upon the Internet reside a series of languages which allow information to travel between computers. Arpanet was the first real network to run on packet switching technology. On October 29, 1969, computers at Stanford and UCLA connected for the first time. In effect, they were the first hosts on what would one day become the Internet. An Arpanet network was established between Harvard, MIT, and BBN, the company that created the interface message processor computers used to connect to the network in 1970. In 1991, the first friendly interface to the Internet was developed at the University of Minnesota. The University wanted to develop a simple menu system to access files and information on campus through their local network. A debate followed between mainframe adherents and those who believed in smaller systems with a client-server architecture. In 1989 another significant event took place in making the nets easier to use. Tim Berners-Lee and others at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics proposed a new protocol for information distribution. This protocol became the World Wide Web in 1991.
