What is Philosophy?
Philosophy is both a way proposing and interrogating the meaning of human life as well as an intellectual discipline that fosters the best thinking possible in its students. Philosophy is the investigation of enduring and foundational questions about ourselves, the world, and society, such as: What is real? Does God exist? Is the mind separate from the body? Do we have free will? What can we know, and how can we know it? It is also the only discipline that challenges everything, even itself. This is what separates philosophy from the sciences, history, literature and the arts. Although philosophy and these other disciplines share some of the same goals, philosophy alone aims to see how they are connected and to understand what makes them possible. It involves thinking carefully and analytically, in conversation with others, about the really big questions. While it has its own characteristic areas of study, it is a subject area that is also uniquely open to all other disciplines.
