What is Viva Favela
Viva Favela started in 2001 as the digital media production branch of Viva Rio, one of the largest nongovernmental organizations in Brazil. Founded in 1993 as a citizen’s coalition against increasing instability due to violent skirmishes between drug trackers controlling favelas and the Rio de Janeiro police, Viva Rio brought together favela community leaders, university professors, journalists, popular musicians, and other high profile gestures to create vigils and workshops about public security attention generated around the vigils spurred a series of Viva Rio sponsored workshops in favelas directed mostly at deterring young people from working in the drug trade. These workshops covered both practical topics like job skills training and registering for citizenship benefits to creative avenues including acting, musical performance, percussion, and photography. In 1995, Viva Rio incorporated as an NGO dedicated to promoting the peaceful integration of favelas into the city as a whole. Adopting a holistic approach to community development, the NGO focused on how to provide health, financial, and infrastructural services to favela communities.
