What is the Domino Theory?
During the Cold War which led to the Vietnam, there has been a theory that developed which is called the Domino Theory. After a careful assessment of the political situation in Viet Nam, the US under the leadership of President Dwight D Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles concluded that had elections been held in 1956, Ho Chi Minh would “win overwhelmingly” over anyone supported by the French or by Viet Nam’s royalists The US believed that a victory by Ho Chi Minh would result in a unified Viet Nam under the Communist Party, a “surrogate” and ally of the People’s Republic of China and the USSR, against whom the United States was locked in a bitter Cold War The US believed that if Viet Nam fell to the Communists, the rest of Southeast Asia would become “communist” or “tumble like dominoes” as put by John Foster Dulles the so-called Domino Theory, and the US must see to it that this did not happen, at all costs.
