What is Ronald Reagan’s grand strategy?
Early in his first term, Reagan characterized the Soviet Union as an evil empire, charging that the only morality they recognize is that which will further their cause: meaning they reserve unto themselves the right to commit any crime; to lie; to cheat. From the Reagan administration’s perspective, a prerequisite for such a policy shift was to rebuild America’s military power. Among the projects to be funded was the construction of 100 B-1 bombers, development of neutron bombs, renewing the production of poison gas for use in chemical warfare, the deployment of the MX missile, and an upgrading of the Rapid Deployment Force. Modernizing America’s strategic forces was held to be particularly important because a window of vulnerability” had opened in the US-Soviet strategic balance. The most visible symbolic stick employed by the Reagan administration against the Soviet Union was the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) or “Star Wars”. Strategic Defense Initiative – called upon the scientific community to devise a system that would allow the US to intercept and destroy Soviet’s strategic missiles before they reach US soil or that of its allies.
