What are the military declines of the U.S.?

The US government found it increasingly difficult to promote political stability and to exercise military force: In Iran, the U.S. was able to overthrow the Iranian government, restoring the Shah to power in 1953 but 25 years later, the U.S. could not stop the Iranian revolution and the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini and also the Iran hostage crisis in American politics. Quick and easy military victories such as in Panama and Grenada were still possible but becoming more costly politically. The Vietnam war was symptomatic of the increased resistance that the United States found when attempting to exercise political and military force abroad – the multilateral support for American intervention became less certain and governments dependent on American support became more difficult to influence. In conclusion, the United States continued to be one of the most powerful countries in the world but no longer the way it exercised economic, political and military influence during the late 1940s and 1950s.
