What is delegitimization?
As mentioned by Knutsen (1999), because they confuse their own political mythology with the natural state of affairs, “hegemons regularly express a remarkable inability to understand the seething mix of hatred, administration, and ridicule that they inspire abroad. They are not in the habit of examining closely their own myths, rules, laws, and values. They simply take them for granted. According to Betts (2002), in his book The Soft Underbelly of US Primacy September 11 reminded those Americans with a rosy view that not all the world sees U.S. primacy as benign, that primacy does not guarantee security, and that security may now entail some retreats from the economic globalization that some had identified with American leadership. Primacy has two edges—dominance and provocation.” America’s global primacy is one of the causes of this war. It animates both the terrorists’ purposes and their choice of tactics. The vastness and pervasiveness of American power—hard and soft—in other words, have complex and contradictory implications. Ultimately, it is the dynamic interaction between the government, society, and global/historical context that will determine the complexity and direction of the future politics of U.S. foreign policy, as it is explored at greater length.
