What is China’s modern foreign policy?
In foreign policy, China adheres to the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence which is mutual respect for integrity and sovereignty, non-aggression, non- interference, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence. There is also the Four Nos which are no hegemony, no power politics, no military alliances and no arms racing. Beijing reiterates its peaceful rise, which means that China will be a power not through military force and material acquisition in the international system but by promoting greater international harmony. Beijing Olympics in 2008 is proof of China’s determination to demonstrate its growing importance in the international system as well as its dedication to greater global cooperation. China is seeking to better manage globalization for the betterment of the state while ensuring that the Communist Party maintains its paramount role in Chinese governance. It is one of the P5 members with veto power and it has insisted that international intervention must be guided by the UN. As a result, it was supportive of UN peace operations in East Timor and the Middle East, but critical of NATO intervention in Kosovo in 1999.
