What is China’s Great Power Diplomacy?
In the past, the rise of a great power is often defined as the displacing of another great power from that rank, sometimes in a hostile manner. This norm has become riskier in the modern era of nuclear weapons. Now, China does not only focus its interests to the two superpowers in the Cold War. It also aims to strengthen its relations with developing states. China’s cross-regional diplomacy has further underscored Beijing’s increasing confidence in developing its foreign policy well beyond its original ‘comfort zone’ in the Asia-Pacific region. This has marked a major step in China’s development from a regional power to a one which is more comfortable in engaging in the international system. China’s ‘bigness’ has been extended to health and environmental issues; the most polluted cities in the world in China; although a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol, its developing country status has exempted it from many of the agreement’s provisions.
