What is the possible future of the American National Style?
Change might come about as a result of the increased presence of women, blacks, and Hispanics in the policy-making process. These different nationalities may bring to the policy processes a different style of acting and think about solutions of foreign policy problems. The onset of such crises increases societal receptivity to new ideas and creates a window of opportunity for these ideas to seize a place on the political agenda. Realism seemed ill-suited for the emerging conditions of post-cold war international relations. This stimulated a search for an alternate worldview and a renewed interest in Wilsonianism. The American national style has been a source of weakness and strength. The fit between American national style and future policy problems is uncertain but much rests on both the nature of those problems and the ability of policymakers to learn from the past. Such patterns aforementioned cannot be seen as dictating the details of US foreign policy but rather are capable of placing boundaries on what type of action will be considered permissible or appropriate for the US to undertake.
