How is China's relation with the U.S.?

At the end of the Cold War, China was displeased by the new world order, where the United States became the single superpower in the 1990s. China, then, repeatedly called for a more multilateral world system with many superpowers having a say in major issues. During the Global War on Terrorism after the 9/11, President Bush sought China’s assistance in combating terrorism and extremism, since China is also worried about terrorism in both domestic and international level. Critics of Chinese Foreign Policy often describe its relations with the United States as “a marriage of convenience”, and that great power competition between the two sides will inevitably take place.
However, critics also argue that unlike the Soviet Union, China has no direct sphere of influence, like the Eastern Europe of the USSR.
