How did Bush respond to critics?
At times Bush displayed this quality, but not, say, critics, in his policies toward Iraq. Critics argued that his administration did not prepare adequately for the post-invasion reconstruction phase in Iraq and that the president did not put enough “boots on the ground” to quell the bloody insurgency that erupted after the end of major fighting was declared. Bush responded to critics, repeatedly saying more troops would be sent if the generals asked for them and maintained that no such request had been forthcoming. He also proclaimed during the 2004 presidential campaign that “you may not agree with me, but you know where I stand.” Bush maintained a Manichean, black-and-white view of the world that extended not only to adversaries abroad but also to critics at home. Extreme sensitivity to secrecy and loyalty complemented that worldview. Despite campaign controversy over Iraq, the American people continue to give Bush high marks for his conduct of the war on terrorism. That applause contributed markedly to his successful re-election bid.
