How did Bush deal with Saddam Hussein?
In March 2003, Bush presented Saddam Hussein with a 48-hour ultimatum to leave Iraq; soon after, the US began Operation Iraq Freedom aimed at a decapitation strike to eliminate the Iraqi leadership targets in Baghdad. Major fighting began and in April, Baghdad fell. In May, major combat operations in Iraq ended. However, the Iraqis protested violently the ensuing American occupation of Iraq. US sent more troops until combat deaths in Iraq reached the level of the Persian Gulf War. The year 2003 ended with a major success for the administration as Saddam Hussein was captured. But in 2004, terrorist attacks and uprisings intensified. In June, the US searched for an exit strategy and went back to the UN and obtained support for a resolution ending the American occupation of Iraq and outlining a role for the UN in post-transition Iraq. In June 2003, the US transferred power to a new Iraqi government.
