How did the Obama Administration address the war on terrorism?
The Obama administration was faced with the need to address the war on terrorism and the legacy of the Iraq War, but also at a time when the American and international political economy was teetering on the brink of collapse, now referred to as the Global Recession of 2008. In addition to urgently needed attention to foreign economic policy, the Obama administration also had to deal with a variety of national security issues inherited from the previous Bush administration. The most pressing was the administration’s efforts to withdraw American troops from the Iraq War and turn the war over to Iraqis while at the same time increasing American troop levels in Afghanistan and operations in Pakistan. The Obama administration emphasized the need for Keynesian governmental spending and involvement as the primary source for calming the markets, restoring confidence, and increasing the likelihood of an economic recovery—in a very pragmatic and experimental way.
