What is Classical Realism?
Classical realism views the world as relatively anarchical and conflictual. The primary actors are sovereign and independent states. The most important issues revolve around national security and the use of force. The principal motivation is the promotion of national power and wealth and prestige. So-called realists focus on tremendous uneven distribution of power among states, on great power conflicts, the rise and decline power, the maintenance of stability and order, and the utility of force as a means to settle disputes and international conflict.Conservative realists tend to be more pessimistic about the future possibilities of a world of greater peace, prosperity, and the human development. Michel Doyle stated that to realists it is the “the nature of humanity, or the character of states, or the structure of international that allows war to occur. This possibility of war requires that states follow ‘realpolitik’ or to be self-interested, and prepare for war and calculate.
