What is Anemia?

Anemia is a medical condition in which your body does not produce enough red blood cells which are necessary to carry oxygen from the lungs to the other parts of your body. This lack of oxygen causes you to feel fatigued and can eventually lead to other much more serious health complications. Also known under the name “iron-poor blood”, anemia is a disease that is very common. According to the World Health Organization, one-third of the world’s population may have low red blood cells because of insufficient iron. Iron deficiency is the most common nutrient deficiency in the world. An anemic person may experience a pale appearance, the feeling of being tired and weak, increased occurrences of headaches and difficulty fighting infections. Because of these symptoms, it is important to test for, diagnose and treat children early. When school-age children experience these symptoms, they are less focused, thus hindering learning and possibly affecting behavior.
