Who is Prophet Muhammad?

Muhammad was born in a merchant family in Mecca. His clan is prosperous and influential, but his father dies before he is born and his mother dies when the boy is only six. He got married when he is twenty-five and for the next fifteen years, he lives the life of a prosperous merchant. He then develops one habit untypical of merchants. From time to time he withdraws into the mountains to meditate and pray. In about the year 610, he had a vision which changed his life. It is on Mount Hira, according to tradition, that the archangel Gabriel appears to Muhammad. He describes later how he seemed to be grasped by the throat by a luminous being, who commanded him to repeat the words of God. The sources mention only one or two other events in Muḥammad ‘s life from the time of the stories of his childhood journey to Syria with his uncle Abū Ṭālib until the time of his marriage to Khadījah, when he is said to have been twenty-five.
