What is Psychosis?

Psychosis causes people to misinterpret or confuse what is going on around them. For example, they may have hallucinations or delusions. The first episode of psychosis is most likely to happen in late adolescence or in the early adult years. Psychosis can prevent people from functioning normally and caring for themselves. If the condition is left untreated, people can sometimes harm themselves or others. Prevention depends on the cause. For example, avoiding alcohol abuse prevents alcohol-induced psychosis. Treatment also depends on the cause of the psychosis. Care in a hospital is often needed to ensure the patient’s safety. Antipsychotic drugs, which reduce hallucinations and delusions and improve thinking and behavior are helpful, whether the cause is a medical or psychiatric disorder. In conclusion, Psychosis is a treatable mental disorder and the most effective form of treatment involves using a combination of medication and therapeutic support so professional help is necessary.
