What is Subway Sandwiches?
The Subway Sandwiches franchise was started in 1965. It was started by Fred DeLuca, who ran the day to day operations of the business and Dr. Pete Buck, who helped finance the start-up of the business. Subway Sandwiches started with a $1,000 investment by Dr. Buck. In 1974, the company had 16 restaurants in Connecticut, and started franchising the next year. Mr. DeLuca’s friend Brian Dixon was the first franchise owner. For its first 11 years in business, Subway Sandwiches only sold subs that were one foot in length. In 1977 though, they introduced the smaller version of their subs. Back then it was known as the “Snak” sandwich, and that is what is known as the six-inch sub today at Subway Sandwiches. It was not until 1989 that Subway Sandwiches had a location in every state throughout the United States. That was a big year for Subway, as it opened its 3,000th store that year as well. Subway appeared in the movie “Lethal Weapon 2” that year, and opened its first store inside a grocery store.
