Who is Mao Zedong?
He studied the doctrines of Marxism-Leninism and was present at the founding of the Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai in 1921; he assumed leadership of the CCP in 1945. His background influenced his thought that the peasantry rather than the working classes should form the basis for a socialist revolution in China He was a military leader in the battles against both the Japanese occupation forces and the opposition Nationalist front. When the Communists took Beijing, Mao declared the success of the Revolution at Tiananmen Square and that the Chinese people had ‘stood up’. Mao’s economic policies were also disastrous. His decision to collectivize farm production led to a precipitous decline in agrarian output. This cause the massive famine of the 1960s. Chinese officials tried to hide the extent of starvation and foreign aid was not welcome. It is estimated 70 million of Mao’s own countryman died at his hand either directly or indirectly through his policies. He died in 1976.
