What is Costco?

What is Costco?

Costco is a Membership-based warehouse store that offers reduced prices on bulk goods. Membership costs $55 for businesses and not-for-profit organisations and $60 for individuals. Membership cards must be shown upon entering the warehouse and again at the registers. First Australian store opened today at 381 Footscray Rd, Docklands. Worldwide, Costco boasts 556 stores, 143,000 employees and 58 million members. The warehouse operates on a self-service basis, with all items sold in bulk quantities. For example, one of the more popular items with shoppers today was a 60-pack of Kleenex toilet rolls. A Costco store typically carries supermarket items and an ever-changing selection of other merchandise, including some luxury goods. The stock is stacked high in a cavernous “warehouse” enclosing more than 140,000 square feet (13,000 square metres) of floor space. Despite the large area, a Costco store typically stocks only about 4,000 different items at any given time, about one-tenth of the variety that is available at the average supermarket. Most Costco stores also have ancillary businesses such as pharmacies and gasoline stations.
