What is Tumblr?
Tumblr is a fusion of social network and blogging platform. The name derives from the term “tumblelog,” which refers to the short blog posts – themselves called microblogs – the site is optimized for. Tumblr’s major differentiator is the free-form nature of the site and the ability of users to heavily customize their own pages. This is the exception to the rule, as nearly all other social networks have standardized profile pages with limited design flexibility. Developed by web designer David Karp starting in 2006, Tumblr was a project that began while Karp was a two-week gap between jobs. Karp had taken an interest in the new “tumbleblogs” for a while and had actually been expecting one of the existing platforms to release their own tumble blogging site. After waiting for about a year for the new design, Karp decided to do it himself. He worked with developer Marco Arment to achieve the Tumblr blogging platform they had been waiting for someone else to develop. Officially launched in February of 2007, within two weeks the service boasted 75,000 users
