Could the World War I be avoided?
On 21 June 1914, Leon Bilinski, Austrian finance minister was talking to Serbian diplomat Jovan Jovanovic, who’s just informed him that there may be an assassination plot against Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne, in Sarajevo. However, Jovanovic had a reputation of being only full of gossip, Bilinski did not take his warning seriously. But one week later, deadly shots are fired at Ferdinand that triggered World War One and left millions dead. Would world history have run differently if Bilinski had heeded the warning, and sought to keep the Archduke safe? There were other tensions in place that would’ve resulted in an explosion of some kind. Losses would have been even higher, and the military infrastructure – particularly medical provision – would’ve been utterly overwhelmed. In desperation, the warring parties would’ve agreed to a truce – two years before the US were to join the conflict. The extent of the chaos and destruction that would’ve ushered in a swift end to the apocalypse would probably have created a new awareness, at all levels, that Europe represented a community. An early end to World War One would have encouraged the establishment of full democracy in Germany.
