What are the negative effects of Social Media?
Different sectors of society can provide various risks in social media. People from the Information Technology field can identify viruses and malware as risks, while lawyers and record managers are more geared towards liability from personal messages, online sexual harassment, and leakage of confidential information. Furthermore, social media can become a pathway for public humiliation whatever a person posts online can be used against them (Cross 2013, pg. 128), may it be tweets, blog posts, or unwanted pictures online. This can cause a person’s good reputation, job, relationships, and mental health to deteriorate. Facebook reportedly receives an estimate of 54,000 “Revenge-Porn” cases on a monthly basis alone (McGoogan, 2017), and not all Revenge-Porn accounts on Facebook are reported. Lawmakers are still having a difficult time to troubleshoot cyber crimes since hackers are becoming more and more advanced. This is because Cybercrimes are harder to settle in court since there should be a strong set of evidence presented. In order to avoid meticulous litigations, one must know how to use social media as an advantage to better their lives, yet to be smart and cautious enough to avoid the dangers they are susceptible of when surfing the worldwide web.
