What happened to Venezuela during Colonization period

During the colonization period, the Spanish first established their community called Nueva Cadiz but was later wiped out by a tsunami. The Spaniards did not pay attention to Venezuela since they gave more importance to other colonies in South America who produced minerals. However, this would change when the colonizers later discover that Venezuela had rich oil reserves hidden in its territories. The discovery of petroleum reserves made Venezuela significant for the reigning Spaniards in South America. (Tinker-Salas, 2015). During the 1800s, a man named Simon Bolivar rallied against the Spanish Colonizers with mostly native Venezuelans behind him. Moreover, he appealed to wealthy creoles through a conservative process. (Riggs, 2013). Due to his military tactics and leadership, he was able to liberate Colombia in 1819, Venezuela in 1821, and Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia in 1825. His victory at the Battle of Carabobo in 1821 paved way for Venezuela’s independence from its Spanish rulers.
