What is a Geisha?

What is a Geisha?

Other cultures have been fascinated with the mystery surrounding a Geisha’s life. Geisha are traditional female entertainers that are skilled in music, dance, games, conversation, and tea ceremonies. They begin their training in Okiyas at a young age, and cannot see their families and friends outside the training house. When they complete their basic training for six months or so, they become maikos or an apprentice geisha. Once a maiko starts earning, she must repay her debt to the Okiya since the Okiya is in charge with her boarding, food, clothes, and other items needed for her profession. Maikos observe and watch other geishas and maikos at any ozashiki, or a traditional banquet. There is a myth that geishas are prostitutes, however, that is something that is needed to be debunked. They are professional entertainers who are skilled with arts and performing, therefore, they are not prostitutes. They are very graceful women who devote their time in one of the most difficult yet beautiful professions in the world.
